On The Ropes – Danny Green Looking At Big Name Heavyweights
Danny Green’s team are looking at big name heavyweights as potential opponents for the IBO cruiserweight champion.
Ring magazine no. 7 cruiserweight Green looked awesome in stopping veteran Manny Siaca last Wednesday night and claimed some bragging material against Anthony Mundine who surrendered the WBA super middleweight belt to Siaca in 2004.
With names like Evander Holyfield, Shane Cameron, and even WBA heavyweight champion David Haye being bandied about, Green has some sizeable options should a Mundine rematch not happen. While Holyfield and Cameron are winnable fights, most feel Haye may be a bridge too far.
Antonio Tarver’s name has also got back in the picture. Tarver kayoed Roy Jones in two rounds in 2004.
Argentina’s Sergio Gabriel Martinez (45-2-1, 25 ko’s) won the WBC/WBO and Ring Magazine middleweight titles with a unanimous decision over American Kelly Pavlik (35-2, 30 ko’s) in Atlantic City on Sunday. Martinez went in as the WBC light middleweight titlist and was coming off a close loss to pound for pound entrant and fellow southpaw Paul Williams in an excellent non title middleweight bout in December at the same venue.
Going in on Sunday, he was ranked one by the Ring at light middleweight. A possible rematch with Williams will be on the table as will a contacted return with Pavlik.
Anthony Mundine has been in the US training at Fredie Roach’s gym in Los Angeles. That’s the home to superstar Manny Pacquaio, WBA light welter champ Amir Khan and recently relinquished WBA middleweight boss Felix Sturm. I know Mundine was planning on attending the Martinez – Pavlik bout. The Man is rated six by The Ring at middleweight.
Tweed Stingrays pro’s Trevor Jacky and Matt Burns yesterday finished their sparring for next Thursdays bouts on Jamie Myer’s world title bill at the Gold Coast Convention Center. Matt has done 92 rounds, Trevor 65 rounds since Christmas with both having fights fall through in March.
