Sherrington Defends World Title Against American Contender Rubin "MR HOLLYWOOD" Williams
The Gold Coast’s world super middleweight champion Les Sherrington (25-5, 16 ko’s) defends his WBF and PABA titles on Thursday night April 29 at the Gold Coast Convention Center.
In the opposing corner will be noted US fighter Rubin “Mr Hollywood” Williams (29-8-1, 16 ko’s).
Hailing from Detroit, Michigan the same Mid West city that has produced alll time greats Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis and Tommy Hearns, Williams has already challenged for world title honors.
In 2005, he gave the undefeated, heavily hyped and huge punching Jeff Lacy a difficult night before being controversially stopped in seven rounds.
Williams holds wins over the likes of three time world title challenger Anthony Stephens (KO 3), top five world contender Richard Grant ( points), United States (USBA)and North American (NABF) champion Kenny Bowen (points) and the 76-16-1 Tony Menefee (KO 9). He rates the victory over Bowman as his best win.
Williams, 33, has faced much stiffer opposition than Sherrington, 27, whose only notable world class names have been Shanan Taylor (KO 5), William Gare (L 12) and Jamie Pittman (L ko 4). Williams believes his experience, left jab and punching power will be deciding factors in the fight.
“There is nothing he can show me” said Wiliams from his US training camp where he has been sparring prospects Ronald Hearns (son of Tommy) and the unbeaten Isiah Thomas. "But a lot that I will show him".
In 2007, Williams fought a 12 round draw with thre time world title challenger Antwun “Kid Dynamite” Echols, who was initially scheduled to face Sherrington. His six most recent foes have a combined record of 105 wins and just 2 defeats!
One of those men was Andre Ward, the 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist who recently captured the WBA super middleweight championship of the world from Anthony Mundine conqueror Mikkel Kessler. Ward won a seventh round technical decision over Williams after the Detroit fighter suffered a cut eye from a head clash.
Also on the first class Jamie Myer presented bill are WBO number 15 heavyweight Alex Leapai – who faces the iconic Bob Mirovic, 2004 Olympian Ryan Langham, ex State champion Matt Burns, NBL star John Szigeti and Australian number 4 light heavyweight Trevor Jacky.
